Research summary

Microbiological aspects play an important role in aquaculture, particularly in artificial ecosystems like shellfish hatcheries. In these facilities, episodes of mortality (vibriosis) caused by some pathogenic species of genus Vibrio constitute the main bottleneck in the production process during the early stages of development. During my PhD, we have analyzed the Vibrio populations associated to the different compartments of the hatchery and their relationship with the success/failure of the cultures. Results demonstrated the close relationship between vibrios and the hatchery environment, then, vibrios flow among the different hatchery compartments is inevitable. In addition, three new pathogenic Vibrio spp. were identified. We have also contributed to advance in the elucidation of the pathogenesis of vibriosis following the infection process in bivalve larvae through GFP-tagged pathogenic species. We have also demonstrated the unsuitable use of chloramphenicol since promoted the rapid appearance of resistant vibrios by means of R-plasmids and was not effective to prevent the vibriosis. We have designed different protocols to reduce the Vibrio concentration and improve the hatchery management from microbiological point of view. During this period, I gained experience in diagnosis, genomic and molecular biology and host-pathogen interactions.

Recently, I´m focusing in diverse topics like phages therapy against pathogenic vibrios or the study of natural competence in environmental vibrios. Regarding to natural competence, I´m trying to identify genes and regulatory connections to reveal how common natural competence is among diverse Vibrio isolates and other Vibrio species and to demonstrate their natural transformation.
